“Because I Like You, Daddy.” --Kelsey Rose Brown
Several years ago, against my own desires, my wife asked (told) me we were going to plant a garden. I have had my share of experiences with garden work from my days on my grandfather’s farm. However, I have also had my share of experiences with not listening to my wife! I decided that it would be easier to dig, plow and plant!
Actually, the garden became a source of relaxation once it was up and growing. It became a ritual for me to go fool around in the garden each evening when I got in from work. It was also customary to have a little “helper”, my youngest daughter Kelsey.
One day in the garden, as Kelsey was following right behind me, I asked her, “Kelsey, why do you follow me all the time?” I will never forget her response, “Because I like you, Daddy.”
Almost immediately I was struck with the thought of how I fall short in my obedience to Christ. I don’t follow Him the way I should. I began to think of the times I went out and did my own thing. Why do we leave Christ’s side?
What does God’s Word say?:
Those who obey my commandments are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them, and I will love them. And I will reveal myself to each one of them. John 14:21
I think we leave Christ’s side because we decide that we like ourselves more than we like Him. We choose our own desires over His will for our lives. We choose our plan instead of His. If only we would just follow Him like my little girl follows me in the garden.
What if Christ were to ask you, “Why do you follow me?” Would you answer with, “because I have to” or “that is how I was raised” or “so that You will hopefully be happy and let me heaven”. I have used all those as reasons for following Christ, but I’m slowly learning that Christ wants me to follow Him because I like Him and love Him.
True devotion and service is born out of love not duty. Show your devotion and love for Christ today. Let Him hear you say, “Because I like you, Daddy.”
Just a thought!
