"Title or Towel"
This is the weekly email devotional of WhoUWith? Ministries (2004)

What are we called to do? "To know Him and make Him known." -Bill Bright

"Are you seeking a title, or a towel?"

Most agnostics, and maybe even a few atheists, would agree that Jesus was a great teacher and leader. If He wasn't, then why is there still so much interest in Him? If He wasn't a great leader, then why are people still following?

What is most amazing is how Jesus led. He served. If you read the gospels, He is never in pursuit of an earthly title. Make no mistake if He wanted to dethrone Caesar that would have been a quick task for God's Son. However, instead of acquiring a title, Jesus picked up a towel. Instead of demanding others kneel at His feet, He knelt and washed the feet of some old fishermen and tax collectors.

What does God’s Word say?:

"Do not love the world or the things in the world. If you love the world, the love of the Father is not in you. These are the ways of the world: wanting to please our sinful selves, wanting the sinful things we see, and being too proud of what we have. None of these come from the Father, but all of them come from the world. The world and everything that people want in it are passing away, but the person who does what God wants lives forever." 1 John 2:15-17

"When you do things, do not let selfishness or pride be your guide. Instead, be humble and give more honor to others than to yourselves. Do not be interested only in your own life, but be interested in the lives of others." Philippians 2:3-4

Some of the best leaders I have ever known were servants. They were looking for ways to make those around them better. It was easy to follow, because I knew they cared. They didn't tell me to go out and succeed, they did all they could to help me succeed. I felt they were as interested in my life as they were their own!

What are you in pursuit of this week? A title, or a towel? Every day we have opportunities to exercise a title...coach, employer, supervisor, teacher, upperclassmen, big brother, etc. However, every day we also have a chance to pick up a towel and serve. What will be your choice of leadership today?

Just a thought!
