“Statues & Pigeons”
This is the weekly email devotional of WhoUWith? Ministries (2004)

“Accept that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue.” –Unknown

Have you ever thought about how strange statues are? We glorify successful people by making statues of them and displaying them in the center of downtown USA. We have this big ceremony to honor our hero of choice. And once all the dignitaries have made their speeches and the party ends, the pigeons fly in and begin to investigate the new high rise “apartments” that the city built for them. And of course, we know what else the pigeons do to statues…I think it is called marking your territory.

If all our hopes and dreams are wrapped up in this world then I guess the most we can hope for is a statue bearing our likeness back in our hometown. That would say we have arrived. We have achieved all that this world has to offer. Isn’t that a little depressing? All you have to show for your life is some concrete that will be decoratively “stained” by the local pigeon population.

What does God’s Word say?:

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. ? For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21

Don’t misunderstand; there is nothing wrong with striving for earthly success. They may want to make a statue of me one day…I hope it will be one of my younger years…when my hair was thick and full and my waist wasn’t!!

However, if all our heart’s desires are focused on pleasing man then we are “laying up treasures” in the wrong place. Our heart’s passion should be in the pursuit of God’s pleasure.

The seasons of our earthly life will be made up times when we feel successful and deserving of a magnificent statue, and then there will be other times when we feel like we are nothing more than the pigeon’s target.

The key is taking the highs and lows of life and filtering them through the love and grace of Christ. Look to find pleasure from God Almighty and let the pigeons take care of the statues.

Just a thought!
