“Spilled Milk”
This is the weekly email devotional of WhoUWith? Ministries (2004)

“You can get over a little spilt milk if you know you still have the cow.” –Texas Proverb

Do you remember the first time you spilled something? You may have been too young to remember that first accident at the dinner table, but you can probably remember the last time you made a mess. As an “adult” those occasions of spilling the milk seem to take on a higher level of embarrassment. I guess because us “big people” aren’t supposed to make those kinds of mistakes.

What about the “spilled milk” times of our lives? We are sitting at the dinner table of life trying to mind our manners when it happens. We lose our job…”get some paper towels and clean this up”. We find out someone we love dearly is dying…”you better get a mop this one spilled on the floor”. Unforeseen obstacles have altered our dreams and plans and now you are losing hope…”you spilt the milk all over the table, we may never be able to clean this up!”

What does God’s Word say?:

“But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you. Psalm 39:7

Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God. 1 Peter 1:21

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, Hebrews 6:19

Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. 2 Corinthians 3:12

When my girls have spilled the milk at dinner, I try to remain calm and remember that each of my girls is special and unique and certainly more important than milk, which can be bought in the gallons at any time!

During the course of life we are going to experience times of “spilt milk”, where our hopes seem to fade and our dreams become like nightmares. It is in those times that we must remember that our hope cannot be completely wrapped up in the things of this world. Our real hope must rest in our unwavering faith of Christ as our Savior and Lord.

When we realize that no matter how bad it may seem He has a plan for it all. He is already cleaning up the mess and pouring us a fresh glass. We just can’t see it yet, because we are too busy “crying over a little spilt milk”.

Just a thought!
