What are we called to do? "To know Him and
make Him known." -Bill Bright
You know what troubles me at
times? Being places where people know me, but I don't know them. Don't get me
wrong; it is a great thing for the ego and pride to have folks call out your
name. But it is also very frustrating, because I feel like I should know them
the way they seem to know me. The truth is most of them only know my name...if
they really knew me they would probably walk the other screaming "unclean,
unclean!!"
The main problem is my inability to remember names, but I
think it goes deeper. I think it could be that, at times, I don't make an
effort to "know" another person the way I should. I don't slow down enough to
see the other person, to learn their name, and to show I care. Sounds strange
for someone in "ministry" (whatever that really means), but the truth is we all
get busy, self-absorbed, and can blow by those around us. What does
Gods Word say?:
"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt
loses its salty taste, it cannot be made salty again. It is good for nothing,
except to be thrown out and walked on. "You are the light that gives light to
the world. A city that is built on a hill cannot be hidden. And people don't
hide a light under a bowl. They put it on a lampstand so the light shines for
all the people in the house. In the same way, you should be a light for other
people. Live so that they will see the good things you do and will praise your
Father in heaven. Matthew 5:13-16
Were all those times
of rectification really a waste? Some were definitely moments squandered, but
true mistakes are those that we learn nothing from and tend to repeat often!
You know what else? I find myself treating God the same way as I do
passer-bys in my daily life. I get consumed with the next project or the next
thing on my task list and I forget to stop and "know Him". Then a few days goes
by and I realize I have been running around doing good things; Bible studies,
teaching Sunday school, speaking, etc., but I have neglected the most important
thing..."knowing Him"!
The most interesting part of the whole deal is
when I don't take time to grow in my relationship with Christ then it is futile
for me to challenge others to "know Him". I'm slowly learning that if I will
take the time to know Christ, then He will begin to make me more sensitive to
the world around me and I will get know others at a level beyond the occasional
"Hey, brother", or "What's up, man?"
The call is for each of us to be
salt and light in a bland and dark world. How do we do that? By knowing Christ
more today than we did yesterday. How you doing? He knows your name; do you
"know" His?
Just a thought! Done. |
