“Goal Getting”

“Don’t ever be too impressed with goal setting. Be impressed with goal getting!” --John Maxwell

Just about everyone is talking about this morning. Our men’s basketball team lost for the first time since we began allowing NBA players to compete in the Olympic games! There was talk that this could be the Olympics that America’s “Dream Team” loses, but no one expected it to come at the hands of Puerto Rico. Having already beaten the same Puerto Rican team by 25 points earlier in the year, the American team assumed that their mire attendance would mean victory.

I’m sure our team had set some goals going into the games, and I’m sure that losing was not one of those goals. However, there comes a time in sports, and in life, where you must put the goal setting away and start goal getting. Talk becomes cheap and you must back it up with your game.

What does God’s Word say?:

Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Joshua 1:8

I’m sure everyone has the “goal” of going to heaven. I have never heard anyone say that they were really hoping to go to hell one day. Likewise, most everyone is trying to do the right thing each day and make God happy. I have not met many who were trying to tick God off! But setting the goal of pleasing God is really all talk unless we are willing to back it up with service.

We can talk all day about believing in God and Jesus and all that church stuff, but it is when we surrender ourselves to Him and begin spending time in His Word…seeking obedience…and looking to please God before we please man, that we taste the sweet fruit of successful living.

When it comes to following Christ, are you just content with showing up? Or, are you ready to play the game? The stakes are a lot higher than a gold medal, but it is also the ultimate “Dream Team”!

Just a thought!
