“Gaining the World”
This is the weekly email devotional of WhoUWith? Ministries (2004)

Did you see John Elway inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame this weekend?

There was a day when many questioned if Elway would make the Hall of Fame because he couldn’t win the “big one” (Super Bowl). After several failed attempts, his Broncos finally beat the Packers for Elway’s first taste of Super Bowl success.

What I always thought to be crazy was, before he became a Super Bowl champion, folks would say that Elway was a good QB, but not really a winner.

I never understood…he held every record known to man for the QB position and because of his team’s failure to win a Super Bowl, Elway was not a winner?!

It reminded me of something in God’s Word:

"For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Mark 8:36 (KJV)

By football’s standards, Elway had gained the whole world…but until he won a Super Bowl he had not gained the label of “Champion”.

By the world’s standards, YOU may have gained a whole lot…cars, money, big time job, family, starting position on the team, fame, etc. But are you losing the “big one”? Are you sacrificing your soul for immediate pleasures or perks?

What is most important to you? Gaining the whole world…or gaining eternal security through a personal relationship with the One who made the world! What the world has to offer will fade…it won’t last. What Christ offers is everlasting. It is the peace of today and the hope of tomorrow.

Whose Hall of Fame are you living for?

Just a thought!
