“For God’s Pleasure”
This is the weekly email devotional of WhoUWith? Ministries (2004)

“God made me for a purpose…but He also made me fast, and when I run, I feel His pleasure.” –Eric Liddel, “Chariots of Fire”

What is your purpose? Why are you here? The fact that Rick Warren’s book, “The Purpose Driven Life” has sold more copies than any book outside the Bible, says that we are a world that is trying to find meaning…trying to find purpose.

The Bible is clear with some basic purposes for each of us. How we should live. How we should love others. How we should share our faith. The general is vital to an effective walk with Christ, but what about a specific purpose that is just for me? Something I can call my own? Maybe it is my vocation…or maybe it is my athletic ability…or my personality. Is there anything unique about me?

What does God’s Word say?:

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. Psalm 139:13-16

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:11-13

Yes, there is something unique about all of us. The Lord has a specific plan and purpose for each of us. I guess your next question is, “How do I find out what that purpose is”? It’s not that you have to find it…it usually finds you! A dear friend of mine likes to call it “looking for the eureka moments of your life”.

In the quote above, Eric Liddel knew that God was smiling when he took his gift of running and used it to compete and bring God glory. Have you found something in your life that you just know makes God smile? If not, stay close to God and keep looking.

Your “eureka” moment will not only bring God pleasure, but you will even experience a brief taste of the joys of heaven. The experience may only last a moment, but that will be enough for you to know that this is what you were made to do. Now get out there and start living with a purpose…let’s give God something to grin about!

Just a thought!
