“Dream, but don’t quit your day job.” -Forrest Gump

What is a dream? How do we get one? If you have one, how close is it to being a reality? Does God care about our dreams?

Don’t worry, I’m not going into a self-help, pick yourself up by the bootstraps, “if it’s meant to be, it’s up to me” kind of stuff! However, I think old Forrest might have been on to something.

It is important to dream…to have desires…to have goals. The real question is who, or what, is the source of your dreams and goals? Are your goals based on worldly success, or on a Godly plan? Are your dreams based on things, or on the Creator of all things?

What does God’s Word say?:

For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11

In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps. Proverbs 16:9

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-- his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2

I can remember through high school, and most of college, my dreams were consumed with money, power and “things”. But a funny thing happen on the way to those worldly dreams, I didn’t “quit my day job”. What I mean is, I continued to pursue a growing relationship with Christ. I spent time in His Word. I spent time with friends who would encourage me in my faith. And God began to change my dream! .

Don’t misunderstand, I know many very successful, wealthy people who have a deeper understanding and relationship with Christ than I’ll ever experience. However, for me God’s dream (plan) was different. How do I know? I haven’t quit my day job.

It is great to dream, but not at the expense of our time with Almighty God. If you try to live out your desires without daily checking in with Christ, then your dream is just that… YOUR dream.

The only way to know God’s dream for you, is to know God. That is your “day job”… knowing and growing in your relationship with Christ. I hope you have time to dream today, but more importantly, I pray you have time for God today.

Just a thought!
