"Would Jesus attend church
today?"
During my travels I get to read a lot of church signs,
but few have intrigued me more than the one I saw this past weekend in Aiken,
SC. It read..."Would Jesus attend church today?" Luke 4:16. The scripture
refers to the time when Jesus returned home and "as was His custom", He went to
the synagogue.
Because of God's great love for fellowship and worship, I
have no doubt that in today's culture Jesus would be in church. However, I also
know that church attendance would not be Christ's lone act of spirituality
during a week in this world. One thing I continue to learn about Jesus, as I
read scripture, He wasn't just a "pew warmer". He was active. He was engaged in
a mission. He was focused. He had a purpose and a plan! What does
Gods Word say?:
In the same way, you should be a light for
other people. Live so that they will see the good things you do and will praise
your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16
My
children, we should love people not only with words and talk, but by our
actions and true caring. 1 John 3:18
If Jesus were
walking the earth today, church attendance would only be the beginning and
never the end. His real work...His real ministry would be taking the church
into the marketplace of life from Monday thru Saturday. Reaching those who have
never been inside the walls of a church. Building relationships. Earning trust.
Sharing truth.
Who do you have in your weekly life that needs to be
reached with the love of Christ? Could it be a long-time friend, a co-worker, a
classmate, teammate, player, coach, boss, employer, etc.? The reality is we
have plenty of "pew warmers"...the most spiritual thing they may do in a week
is listen to a sermon (and usually complain about how it was too long). What we
need are more "heart warmers"...folks that want to please God and love people.
If you are not in church, find one and get plugged in! If you are in
church, then what are you doing during the week to "show yourself faithful" to
the things you have seen and heard
Just a thought! Done. |
