"My athletes always follow my
advice...unless it conflicts with what they want to do." -Lou Holtz
I learned at an early age that taking advice was easy...it was
the application I struggled with! I could listen to my coaches, teaches,
parents and bosses all day long, but if they went too far away from what I
thought was best then I just decided to do my own thing.
Don't get me
wrong, not all advice is good advice. However, there are times that my pride
got in the way of what I knew was sound discernment from those around me. How
do we tell the difference between what is Godly direction and man's opinion?
What does Gods Word say?:
Without wise leadership, a
nation falls; with many counselors, there is safety. Proverbs 11:14
Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many counselors bring
success. Proverbs 15:22
Get all the advice and
instruction you can, and be wise the rest of your life. Proverbs
19:20
Everywhere you turn someone is ready to give you
their opinion. I try to listen to those who are close to me...those who know me
and love me. I also want to hear from those who are walking close with Christ
and have already been where I'm going...a little (or a lot) older than me. It
is important to filter all advice through God's Word...if it goes against what
God clearly states in His Word then it is not advice worth following.
Once you know what to do, the real challenge becomes doing it! Being a
follower of Christ means surrendering your will...your own desires...to the
mission and will of Christ.
Is there some Godly advice that you are
ignoring? Today is your day to follow that advice...to deny your selfishness
and embrace a new level of obedience.
